Gone to See America October 2008 Road Trip. Yosemite National Park.

Red Headed Woodpecker. As I drove through Yosemite Valley on the way to Curry Village to join the Nikonians group for ANPAT 8, I noticed this Red Headed Woodpecker (Northern Pileated Woodpecker) on a dead tree. I stopped and realized that it was loading acorns into the tree for winter. I didn’t know that these woodpeckers also lived in California.

Gone to See America 2008. Springtime in New Orleans.

Some images taken while walking along the Mississippi Riverwalk near the convention center during some time off from the American Chemical Society spring national meeting. The images were all processed using Capture One Pro, including conversion to B&W. Compared with before the hurricane, the area around the convention center has undergone significant urban development and improvement.

Elderhostel “Photography in the Southwest” Workshop Day 3. Hovenweep National Monument.

The Elderhostel “Photography in the Southwest” workshop was based at Kelly Place B&B just outside of Cortez Colorado. This is a great location in McElmo Canyon, quiet and remote. It borders Canyon of the Ancients National Monument. The following images were taken in and around Hovenweep National Monument in Utah.

Winter Nature in New Jersey.

Great Blue Heron and a pair of Mallard Ducks in the pond at the nearby Sourland Mountain Preserve. I guess they decided to spend the winter here rather than in Florida.  Some years this pond freezes over.

Gone to See America. December 2007 Florida Road Trip. Day 6: Birds at Fort De Soto Park.

It is always fun going to Fort De Soto Park. It is located on the southern end of Pinellas county separating Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The park is known for its beaches and is a great location to take bird pictures. The three images for this day include a Great Blue Heron, a White Egret having a cricket for breakfast, and an Osprey building a nest under a full moon.
