Backyard Autumn Nature in New Jersey.

Before it started snowing, a squirrel figured out how to get up onto the bird feeder and start chowing down on the sunflower seeds. By mid-afternoon the snow started to fall. It came down pretty heavy for a while. During a lull later in the afternoon, the birds came back. A Red-bellied Woodpecker, Tufted-titmouse, and American Goldfinch (winter plumage).

Backyard Autumn Nature in New Jersey.

I ran out of bird feed last month. Now that I have a reliable vehicle again, I picked up a bag of black (oil) sunflower seeds and a bag of mixed bird seeds. It took a couple of days for birds to come back to the feeder.  It was cold enough for the birdbath to freeze over last night. The birds that show up now are the ones that stay for the winter. So far today a mix of sparrows, finches, titmice, woodpeckers, and blue jays showed up. The birds seem only interested in the sunflower seeds, and ignored the bird seed mix containing cracked corn and other seeds.

Backyard Autumn Nature in New Jersey.

I woke up at 05:30. It was cold out, right around freezing and the sky clear with no clouds. I set up the Garmin VIRB-360 camera to record dawn and sunrise as practice for a day that I may get some colorful clouds. I used the camera again as I picked the remaining hot peppers (still green). The plants are pretty much dead after several nights when the temperatures dipped below freezing. I haven’t decided if I will use the remaining peppers for a salsa or will just dry them. Later in the afternoon I watched the ever busy squirrels hiding their acorns. This year the deer are also competing for acorns.

Home Renovation Project: Back Patio.

The remnants of Hurricane Michael blew through last night with about 0.45 inches (11 mm) of rain. The temperature dropped to the mid 60’s, and this morning the sky was clear with a bright sun. Today may be the first day this month that my solar panels generate more electricity that I use.  Alan and Lincoln installed the railings for the rear door landing to the patio. Still more to do, but the project is getting a lot closer to being complete. While they were working on the railings I mowed the lawn, and got some pictures of a Monarch Butterfly in my Zinnia patch.
