Seven-Years Ago (14-May-2009) — California

Gone to See America 2009 Road Trip. Day 7: Spring in Yosemite National Park Photography Workshop with Michael Mariant.

I noticed something bright red in the woods when driving into Yosemite National Park. I went back to investigate and found these three strange growths that I had never seen before. Initially I thought they were some type of mushroom. The flowers however gave it away as a plant. Michael identified it as Snow Plant (Sarcodes sanguinea). A parasitic plant that lacks chlorophyll. It derives its sustenance and nutrients from a fungi that attach to roots of trees. Image taken with a Nikon D3x camera and 45 mm f/2.8 PC-E lens (ISO 100, 45 mm, f/8, 1/13 sec).

Five Years Ago (04-January-2011) — Argentina

Gone to See Patagonia 2010/2011. Photography Workshop with Thom Hogan. Day 9: Hosteria El Pilar and Perito Moreno Glacier.

I woke up to more orange clouds at dawn. This time they covered Mount Fitzroy, but you could see the glacier. Before we left Hosteria El Pilar near El Chalten I took some pictures of the lupines in bloom. We then headed into Los Glaciares National Park. where I took a panorama image of Perito Moreno Glacier. As with the previous panorama images, these are best viewed in full screen mode.

Summertime Nature at the Sourland Mountain Preserve.

I finally tracked down a Monarch Butterfly today. Since I returned from the Semester at Sea voyage, it has been hot in New Jersey and the butterflies have been sparse. It was cloudy and windy today so wasn’t that hopeful. Lots of the yellow wild flowers, a very few thistle blooms – but did see several milkweed pods. Finally, I did see one Monarch Butterfly fly by. I had to pass through a lot of raspberry bushes to get close enough to get some good images.
