I woke up early trying to adjust to the 13 hour time change and spent the morning doing a walkabout near the Keio Plaza hotel. One thing I noted on the map of the area was “Niagara Falls” in Shinjuku Chuo park. The waterfall is not as big as the one on the New York/Canada border. I found a woman walking her turtle (tortoise?) to the waterfall. On the way back to the hotel, I took a 360 degree series of images in Citizen Plaza. At 09:30 the  two observatories on the 45th floor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Building open. There is no admission fee, but a quick bag check before entering the elevator.  I chose the south tower, since the line was a bit shorter. The elevator going up is really fast bringing you to a large room with viewing windows all the way around the building. There is a toy store in the center, and a cafeteria/bar along one side. I took a series of images from each of the windows (except the ones in the restaurant area with restricted access) to see if I could generate a 360 degree panorama and/or little planet view of Tokyo. I did not see Mt. Fuji which is visible from the observation towers on clear mornings.

In the afternoon, I returned to Shinjuku Chuo park and found some Poppy flowers. Which was good since I don’t think I will have many (or any) back home this year. I then did another series of images in Citizen’s Plaza and from the North Observation tower — this time with a wider angle lens.t

The images from Citizen’s Plaza and the Observation towers were processed with AutoPano Giga Pro to create composite 360 degree panorama, fisheye, mirror ball, little planet, and tunnel view images. Individual images from the slide-shows can be viewed here.

Backyard Winter Nature in New Jersey. Colorful Clouds at Dawn.

Some interesting colors at dawn. I almost missed it when I found that the camera I grabbed had dead batteries. ARRG! Ran back inside, got new batteries but the colors were fading fast.

Sunday (18-February-2018) — New Jersey

Backyard Winter Nature in New Jersey.

During the night we got 5-6 inches of heavy snow. First some pictures of the snow, including a 360 degree panorama (and the corresponding Little Planet views). I then spent most of the day helping boiling down Maple sap to make Maple syrup. The time-lapse video of the operation will come later when I get a chance to view and process the 6k+ images. The Turkey Vultures were in my neighbors tree waiting for a deer to be hit by a car.

Thursday (15-February-2018) — New Jersey

Backyard Winter Nature in New Jersey.

There were some interesting clouds in the late afternoon. I took some images with a high-resolution camera/wide-angle lens combination (Nikon D810a camera and 14-24 mm f/2.8 lens) that I haven’t used recently.  The first image is a composite of 6 images looking southwest from my patio. I then went out to the middle of the backyard and took a series of 12 portrait and 12 horizontal images to get a 360 degree view of the sky and clouds. It took a lot of processing power to produce these images (Capture One Pro, AutoPano Giga Pro, Photoshop CC, and DxO Color Efex Pro). So much graphics processing that my computer (Microsoft Surface Pro) kept shutting down as the processor kept overheating. Ultimately, I needed to use an external fan to keep the Surface Pro processor from overheating. The images were getting to be over 2 GB in size. Best viewed in in a larger format (click on the image)

Two-Years Ago (27-January-2016) — Japan

Gone to See the World. Semester at Sea Spring 2016 Voyage on the MV World Odyssey. Day 22: Hiroshima.

I am not going to say much here. We visited the Hiroshima Peace Park and Museum. I just wish we could learn from the past and not be two minutes left on the Doomsday Clock. Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock.
