Wednesday (27-April-2011) — California, Mexico, and At Sea

Gone to See Central America and the Panama Canal. Semester at Sea Spring 2011 Enrichment Voyage. Ultimate Travel Photography Workshop II with Michael Mariant. Day 1: Depart San Diego; Travel to Ensenada, Mexico; Embarkation on the MV Explorer.

HDR composite of images of Sunrise over San Diego taken from my hotel room. Three images were taken with a Leica X1 camera (+2, 0, -2 EV) just as the sun started to show above the mountains to the east. The first image was processed with HDR Express, using its Artistic default. The second image was processed with Photomatix Pro using the Compressor Deep settings.

We left San Diego at about 11:00 by bus for Ensenada, Mexico. Once we arrived at the cruise line port we embarked on the MV Explorer to begin the Spring Enrichment Voyage to Central America and Panama Canal. It was good to see many friends from the Caribbean Enrichment Voyage and Ultimate Travel Photography Workshop I (UTPW-I) on board the ship.

After the ship departed Ensenada for Cabo San Lucas there was a small  green flash at sunset. The image was taken with a Leica V-Lux 20 camera (200 mm equiv). This is a good omen for the Voyage!!!

Sunday (10-April-2011) — New Jersey

Springtime in New Jersey.

Snapshot of the CSX 7683 engine at a rail road crossing near my home in New Jersey. Getting a “grab” shot with a point & shoot camera is a challenge. After coming to a stop at the RR crossing, I had to get the camera out of my pocket, remove the lens cover, turn the camera on, adjust the zoom, and try to compose the image through the front window of my car. This was the second shot, and I was lucky get the train in the center. I didn’t get the best composition with the full rail road crossing sign being clipped at the top. Composition with a point & shoot camera requires a lot of luck with the delay between hitting the shutter button and the actual shutter release, and trying to compose the image with the rear LCD display. The other problem I discovered after the fact, was the camera was in “manual focus” mode, so focus for this image was just lucky.

Monday (21-March-2011) — California

Gone to See California. Day 2: Working in South San Francisco.

A couple of images from my office while working in San Francisco on the first day of Spring. Although there was heavy rain last night and this morning, the sky cleared later in the day. The site where I am working near the UCSF campus looks over a large construction site for a new Hospital. I needed to work on the white balance since the image was taken through a window tinted green (auto white balance within the camera 6008 K) . The 2nd version has the white balance corrected (6514 K). Later on when I returned to my hotel I saw this sailboat at anchor in Oyster Bay.

Sunday (20-March-2011) — New Jersey to California

Gone to See California. Day 1: Flight from New Jersey to San Francisco.

Aerial Photography — Somewhere over the middle of the country at 30,000 feet. I don’t know where we were, but it looks like a small town and farm land. This is the last day of winter. A lot of brown, not much green yet. I didn’t have a window seat, so only had this one chance to take an image while the person sitting next to the window was in the restroom. The flight was totally booked, and I was in the very last row. Sitting in the back row has many problems. I couldn’t lean the seat back and I now have a backache. They ran out of food, and I now have a bad headache, and I was right next to the very busy restroom. I prefer driving, even if it is all the way across the United States.
