Monday (05-August-2013) — Iceland

Gone to See Iceland 2013 Photography Safari with Mike Hagen. Day 7: Eldhraun Lava Field.

When I first set this image of the day photo blog up, I was committed to post an image from this day (not necessarily this year) every day. And sometimes commentary of what I was doing and reviews of photo gear, image processing software, and computer gear. I fell way behind during the Semester at Sea Spring 2013 Enrichment Voyage (~52 Days – Spain, Monaco, Italy, Spain, Gibraltar, Morocco, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland, England, Norway, Latvia, Russia, Sweden, Denmark, Germany) with very limited internet access. Once back home I needed to digest the ~70K images I took. When working through these images I noticed that Mike Hagen had an opening for an Iceland Photo Adventure end of July/beginning of August. I contacted Mike to see if I could sign up at the last-minute. Mike was actually in Africa on a different Photo Adventure. His wife got back to me and I signed up. Iceland has always been on my list of places I wanted to visit. Iceland is an image rich environment!!! In the 10 days including travel I took ~35K images. Reykjavik, Geysers, Puffins, Glaciers….)

As far as milestones, I have been retired for just over 1 year – and have visited more than 20 countries, and taken over 200K images. Also, as of yesterday it has also been just over a year since I last shaved. Do I let the beard grow for another year?

Family Portrait Session

I need to redo this with Helicon Focus so I have greater depth of field and the trolls are in focus.

Friday (29-April-2011) — Mexico

Gone to See Central America and the Panama Canal. Semester at Sea Spring 2011 Enrichment Voyage on the MV Explorer. Ultimate Travel Photography Workshop II with Michael Mariant. Day 3: Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

We arrived at Cabo San Lucas early in the morning well before sunrise. My other post for the day documents the sun rising. The shadow self-portrait was taken during the sunrise session.

Rather than docking, the ship anchored off shore and then used the life-boats as tenders to transport the passengers to and from shore. There were some swells that rocked the ship making the transfer from the MV Explorer to the tender difficult, and a very slow process. Folks that were supposed to leave the ship at 07:00 didn’t leave until after 09:00.  During the day I took a series of images of the Arch at Land’s End as viewed from my cabin window, with a Norwegian Troll sitting at the window.

Troll Family: Holiday Portrait.

Practice shot with a new Leica D-Lux 5 digital camera. Image taken in manual mode (ISO 80, 7.5 mm, f/4, 0.8 sec). The vignetting was added during post processing. If the focus is off, my eyes are still adjusting after being dilated for an eye exam.

The Caretaker” A Henning Hand Carved Norwegian Troll.

One of the many trolls that takes care of my house. I never know where I will find him, typically avoiding doing any work. You can find more of his friends at the Henning site in Norway.
