Late-Fall Nature in New Jersey: A Wet Red Fox

While driving home from the grocery store I spotted a red fox at the side of the road helping itself to a venison meal (road killed deer). I was lucky to have a camera with a telephoto lens in the car with me to capture this shot. There were also several turkey vultures wait their turn.  It is good to see the foxes returning, as they were almost completely killed off by rabies twenty years ago (along with the raccoons, opossums, and skunks.

Indoor Autumn Nature in New Jersey: Large Cricket in My Basement.

A new indoor house pet (pest?). I never knew that a cricket could be this big. It had been getting noisy down in my basement. I added the ruler for scale. The radon in the basement must be causing them to mutate 🙂 .

Hurricane Sandy Aftermath: Day 9.

It had been several days post Hurricane Sandy. Many folks were still without power, but PSE&G and the tree folks were in the neighborhood working. I ran out of propane in my RV for the generator, and the local place where I would have gone to have it refilled didn’t have power. The same was true with the local the gas stations — so I couldn’t refill the car with gas or the RV with diesel. At the end of the day it started snowing, and the power went out again.  I got my sleeping bag out and pretended I was camping in my house.
