Gone to See North America Road Trip. Day 18: Denali National Park, Alaska. (Day 4: Nikonians ANPAT 9).

Dall Ram standing on the side of the road in Denali National Park. Even while on the bus we were able to get incredibly close to the wildlife. Also, the colors are already changing as this was the second to last week of the season before closing the park for winter.

Back to the present, the Delaware River has gone above flood stage at the Lambertville – New Hope bridge that I usually cross every morning. I had to take the US 202 bridge to cross the Delaware River, and I could see water almost up to the road bed of the the Lambertville – New Hope bridge. The USGS site shows the river peaking at about 16 feet, with flood stage at 13 feet. This is 3 feet higher than my 29-August-2011 post showing the Lambertville Station Inn after Hurricane Irene. The road was blocked so I could not get down and get some pictures near the Inn, but expect that there is water running under the Inn today. The ground is so saturated after Hurricane Irene, that the last several days of heavy rain from the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee is causing even more flooding.

Lambertville Station Inn with the Delaware River at Near Flood Stage, Post Hurricane Irene.

I took these images of the Lambertville Station Inn with the waters from the Delaware River up to the level of the parking lot. The Lambertville Station Inn is right next to the Lambertville  — New Hope bridge,  which I cross on my way to work in Pennsylvania. This bridge remained open. These images were taken just after the river peaked at about 12 feet above normal. The official NWS flood stage is 13 feet. The USGS has a website where you can see a graph of the river level at this location.

Sunday (28-August-2011) — New Jersey

Hurricane Irene. Central New Jersey, Sunday Morning.

I spent Friday and Saturday getting prepared for Hurricane Irene. The storm intensity started increasing late Saturday night. At about 11:30 PM, I heard a crash and the lights went out. When I got up Sunday morning the wind and rain had decreased significantly. I guess this was when the eye of the hurricane was moving up the coast of New Jersey directly east. When I went out I saw that a tree had fallen next to the road and took down the power, cable, and phone lines. I tried to call in the fallen lines to PSE&G, but couldn’t get past the automated emergency reporting system. My wireless Internet connection also didn’t work. A lot of branches and tree limbs were down in the yard, but thankfully no damage to the house or vehicles. The following images are of the nearby Rock Brook and local woods. Normally at this time of the year, the brook is almost dry. The road closed sign was right in front of my driveway.

Winter Nature in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Delaware River Flooding at Lambertville and New Hope.

When I checked the USGS website this morning I saw that the Delaware river was above flood stage at Lamberville/New Hope. I cross the Delaware River at the Lambertville/New Hope bridge when going to work in Pennsylvania. I went to take a look and took  a few images. The river level was high enough to start to flood the Lambertville Inn parking lot and deposit a lot of trash and debris. Every several minutes a tree floated down the river. The Lambertville Inn is built to allow flood water to flow through and not reach the main floors of the building, and have an image looking through this open space. I assume that the Inn was built this way to protect it because of a history of flooding at this location.
