Backyard Springtime in New Jersey.

The temperatures have warmed a bit, so it is time to get started on the red-brick walkway around the house. The path was laid out last fall with gravel and fine stone dust. The Japanese Andromeda shrub is in bloom. This, and the daffodils are some of the few flowers ignored by the ravenous deer.

Early Springtime Backyard Nature in New Jersey.

I installed a bird-feeder next to my back patio. It took a day for some small birds (Chipping Sparrow) to find it. I wonder how long it will be before the squirrels (and bear) stop by. I will put up a wildlife camera and see what type of critters I can catch. Some Forsythia has started to bloom. Compare the image from today with the same view seven years ago. Finally, some daffodils from today.

Early Springtime Backyard Nature in New Jersey. April Snow.

Not an April fools joke. When I woke before sunrise this morning there were a dozen deer in the backyard, and light rain. By the time that the sun came up, hidden by the clouds, it started to snow. At first it melted, but then started to remain on the ground. Remember those daffodils from yesterday. Well they are now covered with snow…

Early Springtime Backyard Nature in New Jersey.

Some of my first daffodils to bloom this spring. These are ones that I planted three years ago. They are not as early blooming as the ones across the street. I hope that the prediction for snow tomorrow is an April fools joke.

Early Spring in New Jersey. Backyard Maple Syrup Production.

We thought the maple trees had stopped producing sap, but the several Nor’easter storms and the resultant late winter & early spring snow got the sap flowing again. So one final batch of sap needed to be cooked down.
