Autumn Backyard Nature in New Jersey.

Birds of the day viewed at the birdfeeder and in the backyard: Mourning Dove, Cooper’s Hawk, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Blue Jay, European Starling, House Finch, Northern Cardinal. For the second day in a row there were no birds around the birdfeeder in the morning. This time it was a Cooper’s Hawk up in a tree being harassed by a troop of noisy Blue Jays. Once the hawk left, some birds did show up at the birdfeeder.

Security infrared video of a raccoon trying to steal the food out of a rat trap. Maybe the raccoon will stay away for a while. The only thing left in the garden are hot peppers. Just want the rats (and raccoons) to stay away from the bird feeders.

Wintertime Backyard Nature in New Jersey. Day 2 of the 2021 Great Backyard Bird Count.

Several times during the morning bird count the small birds all flew away from the birdfeeder. Finally, I noticed a Cooper’s Hawk perched on a tree in the backyard. Soon thereafter a murder of American Crows started harassing the Cooper’s Hawk. The hawk finally flew away allowing the small birds to return to the birdfeeder.

Autumn Backyard Nature in New Jersey.

The flock of feisty Pine Siskin descended on the birdfeeders in the morning. Then all of a sudden the birds disappeared. I noticed a Cooper’s Hawk perched on a tree in the backyard. After the hawk left, some of the local birds (Mourning Dove, Black-capped Chickadee, White-breasted Nuthatch, House Finch, and a few Pine Siskins) returned to the birdfeeders. Also in the afternoon a number of Turkey Vultures and Black Vultures found a dead critter.
