Backyard Astronomy in New Jersey. Partial Solar Eclipse.

Happy Eclipse Day! Some home renovation issues kept me in New Jersey for the eclipse. I set up a Nikon D810a camera with 45 mm f/2.8 lens and a 20 stop neutral density filter to take images every 4 minutes from just before the eclipse started. Unfortunately, clouds moved in just before the maximum (~78% coverage). The sun and moon reappeared shortly thereafter. The following image is a composite over the 160 minute period of the eclipse. The eclipse also reduced the amount of electricity produced by my solar panels. The two graphs show the hourly production of electricity for the day before the eclipse and during the eclipse. You can see a significant drop when the moon was blocking the sun. My brother Hans was in Tennessee with his family to observe the total eclipse. He sent me an image that he took with a Nikon D3 camera and a 200-400 mm f/4 lens and TC-E II 2.0 teleconverter at totality.

Backyard Late Springtime Nature in New Jersey.

It got dark in the early afternoon as a line of thunderstorms rolled in. A couple of hours of heavy rain helped cool the house down. I was sitting down processing some images and all of sudden it started getting bright outside. As I looked out the clouds were getting lit by the setting sun. Then I saw a rainbow appear. By the time I got outside with a camera the color of the sky was changing, first to orange, then to pink. I got a few shots before the rainbow disappeared.

Seven-Years Ago (29-May-2010) — Puerto Rico

Gone to See the Caribbean Islands. Semester at Sea Spring 2010 Enrichment Voyage on the MV Explorer. Ultimate Travel Photography Workshop with Michael Mariant. Day 3: San Juan, Puerto Rico.

A dramatic sunrise, and then a rainbow over the Atlantic Ocean before arriving in San Juan, Puerto Rico. We then spent the day doing a walkabout through the San Juan old city.

Backyard Springtime Nature in New Jersey.

The rain returned. I wasn’t able to do any work on the garden today. Yesterday I planted another fifty orange day lilies among my daffodils. I often see them along the roads here in the summer, so hope that the deer don’t like them. I don’t expect to see any flowers this year, but hope to next summer. We will see. The “mile a minute” vine is a real pain. It is invasive and overgrows everything, like kudzu in the south. I think the deer brought it here. Talking about deer, this doe was just outside my laundry room door.
