Autumn in Pennsylvania: New Mirrorless Camera (Nikon 1 V1).

I got up early this morning to see how the new Nikon 1 V1 mirrorless digital camera performs. I spent the night reading the manual to get an idea of how to use the camera. As with anything new, you have to use it to really understand its capabilities. I drove to the Lambertville – New Hope bridge for some early dawn images. The Delaware river was up a little over 4 feet in the last day due to all of the rain we got on Tuesday and Wednesday. Still below flood stage but up more than usual. The following image is an old building in New Hope along the Delaware river, taken from across the river in the Lambertville Station parking lot. The Raw image was converted to jpg using Adobe Lightroom 3.6 RC with no additional processing. Note that I had to upgrade from Lightroom 3.5 to the 3.6 Release Candidate in order to be able to see and process the image with Lightroom. More images to follow, and I need to check out if my other Raw image processing programs are able to handle images from this new camera.

Later in the afternoon, I had a great Thanksgiving dinner with neighbors across the street. (Images next post). Right now the camera is outside to see how it performs capturing Night Sky images.

Four-Years Ago (21-November-2007) — Hawaii

Gone to See Hawaii. Big Island Photography Workshop with Thom Hogan. Day 4: Kona and Volcano National Park.

Four years ago I was attending a photography workshop on the Big Island of Hawaii led by Thom Hogan . Before breakfast, I wandered down to the harbor and captured a Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe with a Cruse Ship in the background. We spent a good part of the day driving to Volcanoes National Park. We stayed at the Lodge — Volcano House Hotel within the National Park through Thanksgiving. After getting settled, the group went for a hike down into the rain forest from the lodge where I took these three images. The first is a wild yellow orchid along the trail, the next a purple fungus (?) on the forest floor, and the third a palm frond. All three of the images used my SB-800 flash, where Thom was helping me learn how to best compose and use fill-flash to light up the subject of the image. Although we didn’t experience much rain, a few days after we left the park got 13 and 17 inches of rain and we would have been spending our time taking images of the fireplace (which has been burning continuously since 1877). The Volcano House Hotel is now closed. Unfortunately, the fire went out on 01-January-2010. The hotel is now being renovated, and will not open until sometime in 2012.

Gone to See Hawaii. Big Island Photography Workshop with Thom Hogan. Day 3: Beach at Waipi’o Valley.

Three images taken four years ago while I attended a photography workshop on the Big Island of Hawaii led by Thom Hogan . The first image is two women running to the ocean at the beach at Waipi’o Valley. The second image is of a palm tree overlooking Waipi’o valley, located along the Hamakua Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii. The third image is a sunset over the ocean (location unknown).

One thing that Thom helped me with during the workshop was how to compose an image with at wide-angle lens. You can see an example at Waipi’o Valley beach with subjects near, mid, and far distance at the following link: 20-November-2007. The other lesson was to include a human subject to give perspective and scale to the overall image. The image at the link above includes Thom as the mid distance subject.

Gone to See America October 2008 Road Trip. Eighth Annual Nikonian Photography Adventure Trip. Day 6: Yosemite National Park.

Time-Lapsed Video: Morning at Taft Point.

On the last day of ANPAT 8, we got up before sunrise to get to Taft Point for a different view of Yosemite Valley. After a short drive to the parking area, then a hike to Taft Point I set up a camera with a wide-angle (24 mm) lens to record the photographer working Taft Point as the sun lit up the other side of Yosemite Valley. Later, I put on the tripod head-cam with a fisheye (16 mm) lens to record the hike from Taft Point back to the van. This was the same tripod head-cam set up that I used during Winston Hall’s workshop in Arches National Park record a time-lapse video of that hike 19-September-2008.

Four-Years Ago (26-September-2007) — Wyoming

Gone to See America 2007 Road Trip. Nikonians ANPAT 7 Day 5: Yellowstone National Park.

Shadow Cowboy and Hat. I saw this hat sitting out in one of the steaming pools in Yellowstone National Park. As I tried to figure out how to make it into a composition for an image I noticed folks shadows pass near the hat as they walked by on the boardwalk . I asked a tall guy with cowboy boots to hold so I could get the image.
