The snow was deep enough to keep me from even getting my Range Rover up the driveway to the road in front of my house. I dug a walking path to the road in case the mail got delivered. Being stuck at home gave me a chance to take some pictures out in the snow. This year very little snow.
I first visited Carlsbad Caverns on a road trip in 1976. Well before I had a camera. As part of the road trip this year, I visited Carlsbad Cavern National Park again. This time with a Nikon D4 camera and 35 mm f/1.4 lens that does well in low light. I took a lot of images. Your first walk down into this big entrance going from bright light into the dark cavern. It takes a while for the eyes to adapt to the low-level of artificial lighting in the cave. At the end of the walk, you take an elevator back to the surface. Someday, I want to go back and do the extended tour where you need to wear a hardhat and headlamp.
Our van departed Curry Village at 05:30 AM. That still wasn’t early enough to get to Mono Lake before sunrise (78 miles via Tioga Pass). We spent the morning at Mono Lake photographing the Tufa’s, a unique geological formation rising out of the salty alkaline lake. This is also a major site for bird migrations — feeding on the brine shrimp. We then had breakfast at the Whoa Nellie Deli in Lee Vining (strongly recommended). After breakfast we proceeded to Bodie State Historic Park.

Late night or early in the morning (hard to tell this far north when there isn’t much darkness at night) I looked out my cabin window on the MV Explorer and saw the electric blue Noctilucent clouds. I read about them before (http://www.spaceweather.com/), but had never seen them. The clouds are ice crystals that are very high that you can only see for a short time when the sun is below the horizon. One theory is the crystals are nucleated when micro-meteors pass through the upper atmosphere. We were in the Baltic Sea traveling from Stockholm to Copenhagen and the sun doesn’t set until very late I set up a camera in my cabin and started taking pictures.(Nikon D4 camera, 28 mm f/1.8 lens (ISO 200 or 800, 28 mm, f/1.8, 1 sec)). The composite images were generated using Photoshop CC (statistics, maximum) the way I do generate star trails. I was impressed that you can see the star trails looking north, even though this is a composite of images taken on a moving ship at sea. The seas were pretty calm that night (early morning).
