Autumn Backyard Nature in New Jersey.

Some early visitors to the birdfeeder that all disappeared when a Sharp-shined Hawk perched on the top bar of the bird feeder. I confirmed that it was a Sharp-shined Hawk rather than a Cooper’s hawk by taking a picture after the bird left with a ruler in its place. Today’s visitor measured 27 cm (head to tail). According to the Cornell bird site Sharp-shined Hawk measurements are: male 24-27 cm and female 29-34 cm. The Cooper’s Hawk measurements are: male 39 cm, female 45 cm.

Later on the small birds did return to the birdfeeder included Tufted Titmouse, Black-capped Chickadee, and American Goldfinch.
