Walkabout in my backyard on the last day of spring with a Nikon D3 camera and 200 mm f/2 telephoto lens with a 2x TC-E II teleconverter. Rabbits, dragonflies, fruits, flowers, and wildflowers.

Orange Dragonfly on a Car Antenna.

I noticed this orange dragonfly while waiting for the group to assemble on day 2 of Winston Hall’s Nikonians Photography Workshop in Moab, Utah. It landed on a car antenna and remained still long enough to get several images. I really like the 80-400 mm VR lens since I can hand-hold it and get macro images of insects from 8 feet.

Insects at Sourland Mountain Preserve.

I went for a walk at the Sourland Mountain Preserve. Lots of images of Tiger Swallowtail Butterflies and Dragonflies. Not that many wildflowers that butterflies are interested in at this time. I did see one Monarch butterfly, but it never stopped long enough to take an image. Same thing with a black swallowtail butterfly. I did see one Robberfly, but it didn’t have a meal.

Unknown Mating Insects. Need Help with Identification. Robber-Flies Mating. Summer Nature in New Jersey.

Back at the Sourland Mountain Preserve. This is the same Dragonfly like insect that was in my 19-August-2011 post.  It is as large as a Dragonfly, but is not one since it only has one set of wings. When they are not mating, they are aggressive carnivores, catching and eating other insects.

Thanks to Hans for sending sending a link that identifies this as a Robber-Fly
