Red Canyon Petroglyphs. HDR Examples (HDR Express, Photomatix Pro, NIK HDR Efex, Photoshop CS5 HDR) .

A year ago today (05-August-2010), I attended the Nikonians Eastern Sierra Photography Workshop led by Michael Mariant. I knew I was going to be late comming from work in San Francisco. Michael gave me the GPS coordinated to meet at the Red Canyon Petroglyphs. The following  is an image of the petroglypths processed with Capture One Pro, Topaz, Nik Color Efex Pro, and Photoshop CS5. This is followed by a series comparing different HDR programs (HDR , Photomatix Pro, Nik HDR Efex Pro, Photoshop CS5 HDR Pro)

Let me know which if any HDR images you like or don’t like.

Snow Plant.

Image taken 2 years ago today while driving through Yosemite National Park. I noticed something bright red in my rear view mirror. This was not red flashing lights, but rather something red in the woods. I turned around and found these flowers blooming. I did not know what they were — a plant or fungus. They were later identified as Snow Plants (Sarcodes sanguinea). Although plants, they do not use chlorophyll for photosynthesis, but rather get carbohydrates from coniferous trees via a shared mycorrhizal fungus.

Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE) – Enrichment Voyage: Central America & the Panama Canal. Nikonians Ultimate Travel Workshop 2011 (UTW-II) Day 1: Sunrise in San Diego. Green Flash at Sunset over the Pacific Ocean.

HDR composite of images of Sunrise over San Diego taken from my hotel room. Three images were taken with a Leica X1 camera (+2, 0, -2 EV) just as the sun started to show above the mountains to the east. The first image was processed with HDR Express, using its Artistic default. The second image was processed with Photomatix Pro using the Compressor Deep settings.

We left San Diego at about 11 AM for Ensenada, Mexico to board the M/V Explorer for our Enrichment Voyage. It was good to see many friends from the Caribbean Enrichment Voyage and Ultimate Travel Workshop I (UTW-I) on board.

After leaving Ensenada for Cabo San Lucas there was a small  green flash at sunset. The image was taken with a Leica V-Lux 20 camera (200 mm equiv). This is a good omen for the SAS Enrichment Voyage — Nikonians Ultimate Travel Workshop II.

Early Morning Panorama of the Sand Dunes at Mesquite Flats in Death Valley National Park.

I used four images taken during the Nikonians Academy Workshop in Death Valley earlier this year (27-March-2011) to create a panorama view. The raw images were initially processed using Capture One Pro and then sharpened using Focus Magic. The first panorama was created using AutoPano Giga. The resulting file was 16205 x 3420 pixels (54″ x 11.4″ @ 300 dpi). The images was enhanced with NIK Color Efex Pro (Pro Contrast) and converted to jpg with Photoshop CS5. When examined closely there was a problem at the transition between images. The second panorama was created using PTGui Pro. In this case the resulting file was 14539 x 3894 pixels (48.5″ x 13 ” @ 300 dpi). The image was enhanced with NIK Color Efex Pro (Pro Contrast) and converted to jpg with Photoshop CS5. The third version was converted to B&W with NIK Silver Efex Pro (Fine Art) and converted to jpg with Photoshop CS5.

Comparison of HDR Image Processing Programs.

I’ve used 5 images from a Nikonians Academy Photography Workshop in Big Sur taken a year ago today to compare two of the newer HDR image processing programs: HDR Express from Unified Color, and HDR Efex Pro from Nik. The image is of a waterfall in Redwood Gulch where there is a very wide range of light levels. To smooth the moving water in the waterfall, I used a couple of Singh-Ray filters (Vari-N-Duo and Mor-Slow ND). The exposures ranged from 2.5 to 30 seconds. The initial raw images were processed with Capture One Pro, cropped to a square image and converted to tif. The images were then imported to Lightroom, then processed with the HDR programs. The first image is the 10 second exposure without any HDR processing. The next 5 images were processed with HDR Express using the following defaults (Optimum, Linear, Natural, Vivid, and Artistic). This is followed by 3 images processed with HDR Efex Pro using the following defaults (Realistic Strong, Realistic Gradient, and Vibrant Textures). Please let me know which (if any) you like or dislike.

Additional images are included in my 15-April-2010 Photoblog.

New Images from a Visit to Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal View Point.

A year ago today, I drove from San Franciscio to San Simeon for a Nikonians Academy Big Sur Photography Workshop run by Michael Mariant to begin the following day. With time to burn  I visited the Elephant Seal View Point on Piedras Blancas beach, just seven miles north of San Simeon on the California central coast. Link to an aerial view of Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal View Point. The sun was slowly going down over the Pacific ocean as I took this series of images. For additional images, check out my blog for 14-April-2010.

Comparison of Panorama Programs.

There are several commercial programs that will combine digital images to provide panorama views. During a recent Nikonians Academy Workshop in Death Valley, I took several images from Dante’s View that I have now processed with Autopano Giga and PTGui. Photoshop CS5 was not able to successfully process the images into a panorama view. Notice the snow from the previous storm under the cactus in the foreground. The four images were acquired with a Nikon D3x camera and 24 mm f/3.5 PC-E lens (ISO 100, 24 mm, f/16, 1/100 sec).

Aerial Views from Across America.

I took a number of images while flying back from San Francisco to New Jersey after attending a four day Nikonians Photography Workshop in Death Valley lead by Michael Mariant.  For this flight I did have a window seat, and a GPS to record locations (when above 10,000 ft). I did like taking images with a Leica V-Lux 20 and X1 camera rather than a much larger DLSR. The first images are of Mono Lake in eastern California. The first with the X1, and the second with the V-Lux 20.

During this workshop I did not have internet or phone access so I will retroactively add posts and images from the workshop for the missing days.
