David Mathre Photography

Welcome to my Images of the Day Photo blog. My goal is to post images from each day of the year going back to 2006 when I got my first DSLR camera. Images I post on Google+ are also forwarded to this Photo blog. I am a retired chemist that worked nearly thirty years in the Pharmaceutical industry. I took my first DSLR camera on a road trip across the United States, and became hooked, with my new passion becoming a photographer. I now spend all my time traveling and taking pictures. Since then I have visited over 50 countries, many on Semester at Sea voyages. My photographic interests include travel, the natural world, landscapes, and photographic techniques. I always want to learn something new and the only way to become better is to learn from mistakes.

Three-Years Ago Today — Arizona

I was one of the first people to be allowed into Grand Canyon National Park the first day that the park reopened (before the government shutdown was resolved) with Arizona paying the Park Service. I never expected to visit Grand Canyon National Park with so few other people. There were only three people at Mather Point overlook on the south rim. Normally, it is so crowded that there are three people in front trying to get a view. I was spoiled, and was able to get a landscape panorama without anyone in the way!

Composite of 9 images taken with a Leica X2 camera (ISO 100, 24 mm, f/11, 1/250 sec). Raw images processed with Capture One Pro. Panorama created with AutoPano Giga Pro.

You can see there is haze in the canyon. In the first image I didn't do anything in post-processing to remove the haze. The newer versions of the Adobe Raw converter (ACR) have a dehaze feature. [Top Right]. Before that was available, Kolor had a Neutralhazer plugin to remove haze from images. [Bottom Right]. You need to view these individually in full screen mode.
